dental-elective-peThe Medical Elective Network was established in 2011 to provide international student health care electives and free health care campaigns for people with limited resources in Peru.

Our four week dental elective is managed with our partners at the School of Odontology of the National University of Trujillo. The dental elective includes the opportunity to work in a busy clinic and have the option of developing your Spanish language skills with our dental Spanish programme.

Odontology Clinic

Students and professionals participating in this elective can gain clinical experience in all aspects of dental care at the Odontology school's busy dental clinic as well as participating in classes alongside local dental students.

The four week clinical placement at the clinic is structured and supervised by local teaching staff, with participants spending time in different areas including general dentistry, paedodontics, and surgery.

Whilst there participants will also be allocated a local student to provide support and advice.

Dental Spanish Programme

Our Spanish programme for dental students is a combination of our general Spanish programme and dental Spanish. The general Spanish element of the programme takes place in classes with medical and global health students. The dental Spanish element of the program provides participants with the vocabulary and experience needed to work in a dental care environment.

Children's Dental Health programme

Students may participate in the free dental health programme that we run for primary school children at Madre de Cristo School. This primary school has 600 children aged between 6 and 12 years old. Our programme at the school includes dental health education for the children and their parents, dental health check-ups and treatment for the children, and lots of fun for all.

This children's' programme is managed together with the School of Odontology at the National University of Trujillo.

Dental missions to Peru

In addition to our dental elective programme, the Medical Elective Network also works with small teams of dental professionals wishing to conduct short term dental campaigns in Peru. As your host partners we can arrange clinic facilities, accommodation and pre campaign publicity, as well as making a contribution towards the cost of your campaign.

Staying in Trujillo

We are based on the pacific coast in the city of Trujillo. Known as "The City of Eternal Spring" for its mild year round weather, Trujillo has a population of about 800,000. Whilst the historical centre is home to colonial churches and mansions, the city also has the features of a modern city including shopping malls, cinemas and a thriving nightlife. Trujillo is also minutes away from beaches, sea food restaurants and great surfing. Please visit medical-electives.net or contact [email protected] for more information about either participating on our dental elective programme or partnering with us for the provision of free dental health campaigns.
