The challenge of finals and the giddy high of graduation mean 2017 ended with a bang for many of you, and as 2018 starts you will be turning your minds to starting work. While some of you were lucky enough to secure a solid position before graduation, for others it can take time: rest assured that the right job is out there waiting for you. Arm yourself with the tools you need by reading our Survival Guide.
Contracts
Many practices and organizations provide contracts, and many don’t. Your advice team at Dental Protection can assist with broad guidance on your contract or employment arrangement, and can arrange further legal advice for you, if needed. The key is to not sign a contract you don’t understand, or that you are not comfortable with.
Your new job: the first day
As with any new job, the first day is always daunting, and it will take time to find your place in the team. It is always good to have an induction to best understand the workplace ethos, the practice’s expectations of you and how the practice is run. Make sure that you take the time to understand the sterilization room, and ask someone to explain the current sterilization protocols. Look at the practice infection control manual (many practices would include this in your induction), and don’t be scared to ask questions.
Build your experience
You know the drill! Make sure that you lock in your basics first, and try not to jump into treatments without planning, thought and, of course, a diagnosis (and while this would seem self-evident, it isn’t always that easy). DO seek advice and guidance/mentorship from your colleagues, and DON’T be afraid to back yourself, as the knowledge is all there. The experience will come.
When challenge arises
One certainty is that, at some point in your career, challenging patient interactions and treatments will happen. You do not have to face them alone. Seek advice and support from your colleagues and, of course, reach out to Dental Protection. We are here to help.
Support when you need it
Professional challenge can create stress, and isolation can compound it. Build a solid network of peers, both within and outside your workplace. Consider joining a study club, particularly if you have relocated or are working regionally, as it can be a great way to meet people. Attend CPD, not just to fulfil your Dental Board requirements, but to expand your interests and meet like-minded colleagues. Invest the time early to build and become part of a network of support, as this is what will carry you through your career.
Good luck with this next chapter of your life! I hope to see you at the Young Dentist Conference in Sydney on 12 May 2018.
