Dental Protection is hosting its first dental conference for dentists in Ireland at the Convention Centre Dublin on Saturday 29 September 2018. 

Ahead of the conference on ‘safer practice, better care’, Dental Protection has published new data which reveals an increase of 146% in the number of negligence claims from 2008 to 2017 in Ireland. A dentist is nearly twice as likely to receive a claim for clinical negligence as just nine years ago. A full-time dentist can now expect to receive two clinical negligence claims over a typical career.

Dr Martin Foster, Head of Dental Services (Ireland) at Dental Protection will introduce the conference, followed by two keynote addresses from Simon Kayll, Chief Executive at Medical Protection Society and Dr Raj Rattan, Dental Director at Dental Protection where they will be speaking about practising safely and managing failure.

A renowned figure in dentistry, Dr Joe Mullen, will be speaking about quality assurance in his capacity as the Chief Dental Inspector at the Health Service Executive.

Hilary Steele, Claims Lead for Ireland at Dental Protection will provide an insight into the claims environment affecting dentists. The conference will also present ways to tackle some of the challenges facing modern clinicians such as taking steps to reduce the likelihood of a complaint or claim, dealing with difficult patients and dealing with burnout, stress and incorporating self-care into their lives.

Dentists will get an update on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the use of dental amalgam in light of the Minamata convention.

Dr Raj Rattan, Dental Director at Dental Protection said:

We know safe practice leads to better care for patients, but dentists must also recognise the importance of self-care if they were to optimise the care and clinical outcomes for their patients.

“Our inaugural dental conference provides an opportunity for dentists to learn about trending dento-legal topics that may impact them, hear case-based scenarios, exchange experiences and learn more about recognising and building resilience while meeting their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.”

The conference is open to members and non-members. Attendees can obtain six verifiable CPD, recognised by the Dental Council. Dental Protection members in Ireland will be awarded an additional six ‘RiskCredits’, a reward programme for members who attend an eligible risk management event.
